Training Sites

Presbyterian University Hospital

is a major medical teaching hospital containing 1,042 beds and substantial intensive care units both general and those related to surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and trauma.  A wide exposure to a remarkable variety of disorders is provided.  The patients on the Neurology Ward Service and the Neurology Stroke Service are admitted to Presbyterian Hospital.  A large neuroimaging facility is located within.  Services include angiography, interventional vascular neurology, 1.5 and 3T MRI, Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Nuclear SPECT Imaging, and PET. The facility also is home to a Magnetoencephalogram (MEG), state-of-the-art EEG and EMG laboratories, and am Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.

Montefiore Hospital

is the sister hospital of Presbyterian University Hospital with 560 beds.  The two hospitals are connected by a walkway.  Inpatient services for ENT, ophthalmology and transplantation medicine are located here, including a very large transplantation ICU. Heart, Liver, Lung, Renal, Pancreas, Multi-Organ, and extremity transplantation are supported. Large inpatient medicine service teams work here.  Patients in Montefiore hospital are managed by the Neurology Consultation Service.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is a major pediatric referral and teaching center.  The hospital, which is a newly-constructed facility which opened in 2009, is located in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh, about a 10-minute drive from Presbyterian University Hospital.  Shuttle services connect the Oakland and Lawrenceville facilities. The Department of Child Neurology is located here, and services inpatient child neurology patients and outpatient clinics. Adult neurology residents complete their child neurology rotations here. Children’s Hospital attracts referrals from western Pennsylvania and three surrounding states.  Child Neurology faculty and services are renowned.

Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic

is the major psychiatric university hospital in the Greater Pittsburgh Area.  It is also the center for psychiatric research in the region. A large and highly-respected Psychiatry Training Program is located here.  Neurology consultations are covered by the Neurology Consult Service.  PGY4 neurology residents rotate here for their mandatory psychiatry experience.   A Psychiatry elective is available all years.

Magee Women’s Hospital

is a major hospital for obstetrics and gynecology within the Western Pennsylvania region, and houses the Ob/Gyn Residency Training Program.  Routine and high-risk maternal-fetal services, both in- and outpatient, are located here. Breast and gynecologic cancer centers attract patients from wide areas. Additionally, acute internal medicine services are located here.  The neurology consultation service residents cover consults from the obstetrical and gynecology services.

The Oakland VA Medical Center

is a very large VA facility serving the needs of all Western Pennsylvania as well as some sites in Ohio.  Inpatient and outpatient services are accommodated, and are supervised by Neurology Department faculty.

Hillman Cancer Center/UPMC Shadyside

hosts the neuro-oncology elective under the aegis of Dr. Frank Lieberman.  The site is a 10 minute drive from the Oakland complex. Outpatient clinics, and inpatient consultations are attended. The emphasis is on diagnosis and management of neuro-oncologic disorders, paraneoplastic syndromes, and adverse effects of chemotherapeutic agents.
