Biography
Ken Uchino, MD, is the director of Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program. He studied at Harvard University and New York University. He was a neurology resident at University of Washington, Seattle from 1998 to 2001. His fellowship training in stroke was at University of Texas-Houston under James Grotta and Lewis Morgenstern from 2001 to 2003. He joined the faculty of University of Pittsburgh in August 2003 and became the stroke fellowship director in 2006.
Dr. Uchino’s interests are in stroke care quality and epidemiology. He is developing tools for stroke evaluation in order to make proper stroke treatment more widely available in community hospitals. He is studying and comparing to another approach, remote patient evaluation through telemedicine technology. He has published on acute stroke treatment and use of ultrasound to monitor progress of thrombolysis. He participates in studies of acute stroke treatment and prevention.
Dr. Uchino has collaborative research with the Department of Radiology in using PET to assessment of long-term stroke risk in the setting of middle cerebral and carotid artery occlusion. With Division of Rheumatology, he is studying complement deposition in acute stroke.
As part of the stroke team, Dr. Uchino sees stroke patients at Presbyterian University Hospital and in clinic. Using telemedicine technology, he evaluates patients remotely at several hospitals.
As the director of the stroke fellowship program, Dr. Uchino oversees training of fellows and organizes journal club and lectures. He also teaches medical students and residents.
