Dr. Van Cott continues to care for veterans with epilepsy and directs the EEG laboratory at the VA Pittsburgh Health Care System. She plays an active role in the education of residents, specifically with regards to electroencephalography interpretation. She serves on the VA’s Internal Review Board. With her collaborators at the University of Pittsburgh, she continues her CDC-funded research in improving self management in individuals with epilepsy. She is currently a co-principal investigator in the VA Cooperative Study: "Safety and Dose Escalating Study of Oral Sodium Phenylbutyrate in Subjects with ALS." In the past academic year she was selected to work on an NIH planning committee for a workshop focused on Animal Models of Geriatric Epilepsy. She will serve on the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society’s Continuing Medical Education Committee for next two years.
With colleagues at the University, she submitted a research proposal addressing mood changes in elderly patients with epilepsy to the NIH. She actively seeks funding to study the mechanism of anti-epileptic drug induced bone loss in individuals with seizures. She continues to serve on the Professional Advisory Board of The Epilepsy Foundation of Western PA.
